The pins used in the UART1 serve as general-purpose I/O port.

Setting Necessary for Use in UART
Set to output enable.
(SMR1 register bit 0: SOE=1)
In clock input, set pin as input port in port direction
register (DDR).
In clock output, set to output enable.
(SMR register bit 1: SCKE=1)
Set as input port in port direction register (DDR).
