HP MC/ServiceGuard for Linux
Introduction
This document defines the server cluster configurations supported by Hewlett-Packard for interconnection
of specified HP IA-32 Servers and HP Rack Storage/12 disk drive enclosure(s), Surestore Virtual Array or
Surestore XP disk arrays with HP MC/ServiceGuard for Linux high availability clustering middleware.
These configurations provide high server cluster availability and minimize single points of failure (SPOFs).
A configuration certified and supported by Hewlett-Packard should be adhered to. Deviations from the
supported configurations can result in an inoperative cluster, an operating cluster with degraded
performance, or hidden SPOFs. Therefore, deviations are not supported.

    Networking MC/ServiceGuard for Linux supports redundant networks, even though these are not shown in the diagrams. The redundant client network connections allow local failover from one NIC to another in case of a network path failure. These connections must be on the same subnet. This can be implemented through the use of Virtual LAN support in the network switches.
  • Page 11 LAN connections and the SCSI adapters. There needs to be a minimum of 3 LAN connections per server (1 heartbeat and 2 public) and 2 SCSI adapters. In the examples, integrated LANs are used when possible. The table has 5 sections, one for each server, a storage section and a section for the rack components. The first server is a dual processor LC2000r with 1GHz Pentium III processors.

  • Page 16 Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) It is recommended that a UPS be used for each power circuit or that a site UPS be used. If a site UPS is used, then analysis should be done to insure that loss of one circuit does not cause the failure of more than 50% of the nodes.
  • Page 17 Cluster Topology and Geography The current maximum number of nodes supported is 8. A quorum server node is required to provide quorum service to the cluster. It provides arbitration services for the cluster when a cluster partition is discovered. A node running the Quorum Server cannot be a member of any cluster that it is providing cluster quorum services to.
  • Page 18 Quorum Server In the current release of MC/SG for Linux, the Quorum Server has to be on the same subnet as the cluster nodes. Since only one IP address can be configured for a Quorum Server, it is suggested to configure the LAN used for the Quorum Server IP address with two or more physical LAN cards using Channel Bonding to improve the availability of the Quorum Server if a LAN card failure occurs.
