  • Page 4 Observe the following general precautions for using and working with your system: Observe and follow service markings. Do not service any Dell product except as explained in your Dell system documentation. Opening or removing covers that are marked with the triangular symbol with a lightning bolt may expose you to electrical shock.
  • Page 5 Use the correct external power source. Operate the product only from the type of power source indicated on the electrical ratings label. If you are not sure of the type of power source required, consult your Dell service provider or local power company.

To help protect your system components from sudden, transient increases and decreases in electrical power, use a surge suppressor, line conditioner, or un- interruptible power supply (UPS).
  • Page 7 System rack kits are intended to be installed in a Dell rack by trained service tech- nicians. If you install the kit in any other rack, be sure that the rack meets the specifications of a Dell rack.

Observe the following guidelines when working with options: Do not connect or use a modem or telephone during a lightning storm. There may be a risk of electrical shock from lightning.

Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface on the chassis, such as the metal around the card-slot openings at the back of the computer, before touching anything inside your computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computer chassis to dissipate any static electricity that might harm internal components.

  • Page 21: Powervault 51F Switch Features

    The Dell™ PowerVault™ 51F is an 8-port Fibre Channel switch that consists of a sys- tem board, microprocessor board, connectors for supporting up to four dual-port interface cards, and firmware for building and managing a fabric. A fabric is an active, intelligent, and nonshared interconnect scheme for Fibre Channel server and storage nodes.

    A maximum switch latency of less than two microseconds is specified for Class 2, Class 3, and Class F frames when the output port is free. You can manage the PowerVault 51F switch locally using the RS232 port. You can also manage the switch remotely via Telnet or Dell OpenManage™ products.

    Included with the switch is firmware that can be customized and tuned for each instal- lation. Dell has provided a standard set of commands and interfaces described in “PowerVault 51F Commands” of the Dell PowerVault 51F 8-Port Fibre Channel Switch Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for switch monitoring, control, and management.

    The power supply has a modular design that plugs directly into the enclosure through the front panel, attaching to an internal connector. The PowerVault 51F also supports a second redundant hot-pluggable power supply. The power supply has an integrated on and off switch, input filter, and power indicator.

  • Page 28 User interface Maintenance port PowerVault 51F optical port interfaces use a shortwave (780 to 850 nanometer [nm]) or long wavelength (1270 to 1350 nm) laser transmitter. The laser complies with 21 CFR, subpart (J) Class 1-laser safety requirements. It uses non-open Fibre Control (OFC) optical gigabit interface converters (GBICs) in the switch circuit.

Your computer system uses a lithium-ion battery. The lithium-ion battery is a long-life battery, and it is very possible that you will never need to replace it.

    The user of the device is obliged to take all steps necessary to remove sources of interference to telecommunication or other devices. Most Dell computer systems are classified by the Voluntary Control Council for Inter- ference (VCCI) as Class B information technology equipment (ITE). However, the inclusion of certain options can change the rating of some configurations to Class A.
