    1-2 Notes on Using Your Workstation WARNING LABELS The warning label is attached to components with possible danger or their vicinity in your workstation to inform the user that a hazardous situation may arise when operating the workstation. (Do not take off any label or soil it.) If you find any label unattached, almost peeled off, or soiled, making the warning illegible, contact your service representative.

    1-4 Notes on Using Your Workstation Power Supply and Power Cord Use WARNING Do not hold the power plug with a wet hand. Do not disconnect/connect the plug while your hands are wet. Failure to follow this warning may cause an electric shock. Do not connect the ground wire to any gas pipe.

    Do not use any unauthorized interface cable. Use only interface cables provided by NEC and locate a proper device and connector before connecting a cable. Using an authorized cable or connecting a cable to an improper destination may cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire.

Use of the workstation ignoring the notes will cause malfunctions or failures of the workstation. The power of workstation may be turned off and then on automatically at the first reboot after the parameter of BIOS SETUP was changed.

For stable operation of the workstation, NEC recommends you replace these components on a regular basis. Consult with your service representative for replacement or the product lives.

    2-10 General Description Power Supplies The system contains one auto-sensing power supply at an operating frequency of 50/60 Hz. The power supply is designed to comply with existing emission standards and provide sufficient power for a fully loaded system configuration. Peripheral Bays The system supports a variety of standard PC AT-compatible peripheral devices.

    General Description 2-11 Security To help prevent unauthorized entry or use of the system, the system includes a full lockable front panel and Workstation Management software that monitors the system intrusion switches. Security with Mechanical Locks and Monitoring The chassis contains a mechanical lock to prevent access to the inside of the computer chassis. The computer chassis includes an intrusion switch for the loof cover.

    General Description 2-13 NEC ESMPRO The NEC ESMPRO is server management software that runs on the OS. The NEC ESMPRO includes the NEC ESMPRO Manager for the server monitoring terminal and the NEC ESMPRO Agent for the NEC Express workstation.

    2-14 General Description USING NEC EXPRESS WORKSTATION This section describes basic operations of your workstation including how to use devices such as the optical disk drive. See Appendix B for notes on using the optical disk, and accessories including the keyboard and the mouse.

    General Description 2-17 If you set a password using the SETUP, the password entry screen appears upon successful completion of POST. Up to five password entries will be accepted. Five incorrect password entries disable the workstation to boot. In such a case, turn off the power and wait about ten seconds before turning on to boot the workstation.
  • Page 48 2-18 General Description Power-Saving Mode You can use the POWER switch as the SLEEP switch if the ACPI compliant operating system is installed in your system. The SLEEP switch allows you to save almost all power of the workstation (power-saving mode or sleep mode). To use the power-saving mode, select [Standby] in the Shutdown menu of OS, or change a setting for POWER switch from Power-off to Standby.

    General Description 2-19 Optical Disk Drive The optical disk drive is installed in the front of the workstation. One of the following optical disk drives is factory installed in the workstation. DVD-ROM drive Reads data from various optical disks. DVD Super MULTI drive Reads or writes data of various optical disks.

Character printed surface As shown in the figure below, hold the tray with a hand and press the optical disk with fingers of another hand to make the hole of the optical disk fit to the rotor at the center of the tray.

    3-6 Setting Up Your Workstation PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION With Vertical Installation When you want to install the workstation vertically, first remove the stabilizers from bottom of the workstation to place the workstation vertically. You need to install the air duct on top of the workstation to keep the cooling effect in the workstation.

    POWER/SLEEP lamp The POWER/SLEEP lamp on the front of the workstation comes on green. In a few seconds, the NEC logo appears on the screen and the Power On Self-Test (POST) starts running. The POST runs automatically when you power on the workstation or reset it with a keyboard operation (Ctrl + Alt + Delete).

    Use NEC EXPRESSBUILDER for initial setup of your workstation. The NEC EXPRESSBUILDER is a support software for the workstation.     4-2 Configuring Your Workstation SYSTEM BIOS ~ SETUP ~ The SETUP utility is provided to make basic hardware configuration for the workstation. This utility is pre-installed in the flash memory of the workstation and ready to run. The workstation is configured with the correct parameters using the SETUP utility and shipped in the best conditions.
