How to Use

This appliance is for household use only.

GETTING STARTED

  • Remove all packing material, any stickers, and the plastic band around the power plug.
  • Please go to www.prodprotect.com/blackanddecker to register your warranty.
  • Wipe appliance with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

The blades are sharp; be very careful as you wipe all parts with a damp cloth or sponge. Do not put any parts in the dishwasher.

Note: For your protection, this unit has a lid interlock system. Do not attempt to operate unless the lid is securely in place.

GRINDING

  1. Remove the lid and place up to 2/3 cup (maximum) (approximately 155 ml) coffee beans into the grinding bowl.
  2. Place the lid securely on the grinding bowl. Plug in the grinder. Press the pulse control for a few seconds and release (A). Be careful not to overprocess. Refer to the GRINDING GUIDELINES in this section.

Note: Never operate the grinder for more than 30 seconds at a time.
  3. A coarse grind works well for slower brewing in a percolator; a medium grind will get the best flavor extraction for faster brewing in automatic drip coffeemakers and a fine grind is great for espresso or Turkish coffee. Experiment with the texture of your grind to see what works best with your coffeemaker. For the freshest coffee, use only fresh beans for the amount you will brew.
    GRINDING GUIDELINES
For 2/3 cup (155 ml) of coffee beans
Coarse - 10 to 12 seconds for Perculator or French Press
Medium - 14 to 16 seconds for Auto Drip
Fine - 24 to 28 seconds for Espresso or Turkish
  4. Be sure the blades have stopped spinning completely before removing the lid. Unplug the grinder, remove the lid, then place desired amount of ground coffee directly into a paper or permanent filter in your filter basket or into a storage container. We recommend 1tablespoon (15 ml) of ground coffee per cup (5 oz each) (147 ml each) of coffee you wish to brew.
  5. Whole coffee beans should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month or the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to use, beans can be ground while still frozen. Extra ground coffee can be stored in an airtight container to retain flavor.

GRINDING NUTS OR SPICES

  1. Freshly ground nuts such as almonds, or hazelnuts have a distinct flavor so be sure to clean and wipe out the grinding bowl after using it to chop these nuts (see CARE AND CLEANING) unless you want your coffee to have a slight "nutty" flavor. Use short bursts for a coarse grind when processing nuts.
  2. This grinder can only handle dry, brittle foods. It will not grind anything moist, extremely hard or gummy such as whole ginger, chocolate, sesame seeds or oily spices such as cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg. Do not grind peanuts or grains such as wheat, rice, barley or dried corn. Attempting to grind any of these foods may damage the unit.
  3. Freshly ground peppercorns or spices have a strong aroma and taste that may affect the flavor of coffee beans ground afterward. You may want to purchase a separate grinder if you plan to grind peppercorns, herbs or spices.

Care and Cleaning

This product contains no user serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel.

CLEANING

  1. Always unplug the unit before cleaning. Wash the lid with warm water and dish soap – not in a dishwasher. Wipe the grinding bowl, base and other parts with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. Take special care around the blades; they are sharp! Dry parts thoroughly. Do not immerse grinding bowl, base or plug in liquid or under running water.
  2. Never use harsh detergents or abrasive cleansers or scouring pads to clean any part.
  3. To remove residue or aromas left behind by nuts, grind one tablespoon of baking soda in the bowl then wipe thoroughly.
  4. Use the built-in cord wrap on the underside of the unit to store the cord.
