    1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the D-Link adapter and other network devices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce your adapter’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is minimized.

    Basic Installation This section will walk you through the installation process. If you have a built-in wireless adapter, please disable it in device manager before installing your D-Link adapter. Also, if you have previously installed another wireless adapter, please make sure any software is uninstalled.
  • Page 8 To continue with the installation click on the ‘Next’ button. Step 4: At this point the user is prompt to insert the DWA-123 adapter into the computer for the first time. The Operating System will automatically initiate a universal wireless adapter driver installation process.
  • Page 9 Step 6: When the installation has been completed, a window will appear thanking the user for purchasing the DWA-123. There are two ways to connect to the wireless network using this adapter: 1. By using the Operating System’s built-in wireless utility.

    D-Link DWA-123 User Manual Connect to the Wireless Network This section will guide the user through the process of connecting to the wireless network using this wireless adapter. Remember that there is no additional wireless connection utility included with this product. This product makes use of the built-in wireless functionality of the Operating System.

    “Push Button Configuration” (PBC) is a button on the adapter that after pressed connects you to other WPS-enabled devices. A connection can be established by pressing the button on the DWA-123 and then pressing the physical button on the access point or wireless router within 120 seconds.     Ad-Hoc – Directly connecting to another computer, for peer-to-peer communication, using wireless network adapters on each computer. Unfortunately 802.11g/n products such as the DWA-123 do not support ad-hoc mode. An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point or wireless router. All the wireless devices, or clients, will connect to the wireless router or access point.

    Check your IP address After you install your new D-Link wireless adapter and have established a wireless connection, by default, the TCP/IP settings should be set to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server (i.e. router) automatically. To verify your IP address, please follow the steps below.

    D-Link DWA-123 User Manual Wireless Security WPA, or Wi-Fi Protected Access, is a Wi-Fi standard that was designed to improve the security features of WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). The 2 major improvements over WEP: • Improved data encryption through the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). TKIP scrambles the keys using a hashing algorithm and, by adding an integrity-checking feature, ensures that the keys haven’t been tampered with.

    Troubleshooting This chapter provides solutions to problems that can occur during the installation and operation of the DWA-123. Read the following descriptions if you are having problems. (The examples below are illustrated in Windows 7. If you have a different Windows Operating System, the screenshots on your computer should look similar to the following examples.)

  • Page 22: Adapter Is Not Recognized By The Computer

    Adapter is not recognized by the Computer. In the event when the DWA-123 Wireless N USB Adapter is not correctly recognized by the computer, make sure that the DWA-123 is properly seated in the computer’s USB port. If Windows still does not detect the hardware upon re-insertion of the adapter, try to uninstall and re-install the drivers for this adapter. Also try to use a different USB port.
