    Unpacking and Setup • Unpack the VetScan HM5 analyzer from its shipping container and put out the accesory box. Note: Store the shipping box, accessory box, and packaging materials in case you need to use them later. • Place the analyzer on a level surface.

  • Page 4 Connect the reagent pack as follows. • Open the plastic bag located in the accessory box, and take out the six color-coded reagent tubes and caps with drop-down tubes. • Attach the supplied connector • Insert the six male connectors into tubing kit to the instrument, the free ends of the color-coded as shown.

    Running a Sample • Touch the Measure icon. • Enter the Patient ID on the “New Sample Screen”. • Select animal Type. • Mix the sample well by slowly inverting the tube 10-15 times. Insert the well-mixed EDTA preserved whole blood sample into the appropriate tube adapter, on the sample rotor, and remove the cap.

    Interpreting Results Analysis is complete in less than four minutes. All results and histograms are automatically saved in the analyzer’s database. • When analysis is complete, the analyzer displays all measured and calculated parameters, as well as the WBC, EOS, RBC, and PLT histograms: If the analyzer is not set to print results automatically, press Print to print the results.
  • Page 8 Running a Blank A blank must be run every 12 hours. Each blank measurement remains valid for 12 hours of continuous operation, after which the analyzer displays BLANK needed and a new blank is required. In addition, a new blank must be run each time the analyzer has been powered on and off again.

    Changing the Reagent Pack • In the Maintenance menu, select Reagent status. Select Replace and then Change pack. • Select Prime All to prime the reagent tubing.

    Calibrating the Analyzer Calibration is rarely necessary on the HM5, but should be performed when the controls are running out of range. • Warm up HM5 Normal Control to room temperature. Do not use other level controls for calibration. • Touch Maintenance and select Calibration. Touch Measure.

    Recommended Maintenance The VetScan HM5 requires minimal maintenance, but does need attention to proper sample handling and cleanliness to ensure optimal results. Daily Run a blank. Weekly Wipe down the HM5 wash head with a damp, lintfree cloth. With each change of reagent pack Perform Vetscan HM5 bleach cleaning procedure.

    Shutting Down the Analyzer Proper shut downs rinse the analyzer to keep it in good condition. So it is important to perform shut downs when the analyzer will not be used for extended periods of time. It is preferable to leave the analyzer on overnight if samples will be run within a couple of days.
