It is, without doubt, the most exciting development in television history since the first-ever broadcast in 1936. Inserting the ONdigital SMARTCARD The viewing Smartcard must be inserted into the Smartcard slot at the front of the receiver in order to view ONdigital channels. Remove the Smartcard from the ONdigital envelope supplied with the receiver and insert it into the Smartcard slot on the front of the receiver.

    GENERAL OPERATIONS The digital receiver's frequently-used operations are based on a series of user friendly on-screen displays and menus. The displays provide information to guide you in the use of the digital re- ceiver to help you fully utilize its functions and features from initial installation and channel selec- tion to the use of advanced functions.

    LOCATING AND STORING CHANNELS With the digital receiver properly connected you can now begin locating the new channels. The process is also described in the information included in the ONdigital envelope that came with the digital receiver. NOTE: At the end of this process, you should call ONdigital customer services on 0870-600-9696 to activate your smartcard.

    DAILY OPERATION Switching Receiver ON/OFF Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the digital receiver after it has been plugged into the main power supply. • To wake up the receiver press the remote controller button. • To put the digital receiver on standby again, press the remote controller button.

    DAILY OPERATION Using the Channel List The channel list can also be used to view channels that are available using the digital receiver. The list is displayed on top of the programme being viewed and also indicates which channels have been selected as favourites and the channels that are locked.

  • Page 26 DAILY OPERATION To change the channel while the On-screen TV Guide is displayed, press the remote controller SELECT button when the information for the de- sired channel is displayed. This feature can also be used to display additional information about the current and next programme. To display additional information about the current programme press the YELLOW button.

    DAILY OPERATION Selecting Favourite Channels You can use this function to select and store favourite channels to make it more convenient to view them. When in the favourite channels mode, pressing the P+ and P- buttons will only switch between the stored favourite channels.
  • Page 28 DAILY OPERATION To add channels to the favourite channels list, use the 5 (UP) or (DOWN) button to highlight the de- sired channel, and then press the SELECT button. The favourite channel symbol will be displayed next to the selected channel name.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS ADVANCED SETTINGS Using the Parental Lock The parental lock can be used to restrict access to any channel using a self-selected security (paren- tal) code. Entry of the security code is required to view a locked channel. When selecting this option for the first time you will be prompted to enter a new parental code. After a security code has been registered the first time, entry of the security code will be required to subsequently access the Channel Locking Menu or a locked channel.
  • Page 30 ADVANCED SETTINGS The code will be displayed on the screen as you enter it. NOTE: The 2 (LEFT) button can be used to backspace and correct mis- taken number entries. IMPORTANT: Write down the code you select and kept it in a safe place for future reference.
  • Page 31 ADVANCED SETTINGS To change the parental lock code After the parental lock code has been entered, the Parental Lock menu will then give you the option of changing the current code. The code can be changed by first entering the current code and then entering the new code.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Selecting Channels to be Locked Select the Choose Channel to Lock or Unlock op- tion from the Parental Lock menu and then press the SELECT button. You will be prompted to enter the current parental lock code, after which a list of all available channels will be displayed.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Watching Locked Channels There are two ways to access and watch locked channels. Either unlock an individual channel you have selected or go to the Choose Channel to Lock or Unlock menu and temporarily unlock all channels.   • Page 34 ADVANCED SETTINGS Use the number buttons (1 to 9) to enter the pa- rental lock code. As you enter the code asterisks will be displayed instead of the code numbers. After entering the parental lock code, press the SELECT button to confirm the code. If the correct code was entered the locked channel will be selected.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Timer Setting the timer You can use the TIMER SETTINGS function to program the digital receiver to turn on and off at pre- set times. Up to 8 different time slots can be set. This makes it possible to set your VCR to record more than one digital channel.
  • Page 37 ADVANCED SETTINGS Use the 5 (UP) or (DOWN) button to select an available time slot, and then press the SELECT button to display the Setting the Timer screen. At this screen you are prompted to confirm the date, channel num- ber, start time, end time, and programme status (once only, daily, or weekly).
  • Page 38 ADVANCED SETTINGS Confirm the entry by pressing the (DOWN) but- ton. The start time will then be highlighted. Enter the start time. It is recommended that you enter the start time a few minutes be- fore the VCR is scheduled to start recording the programme to en- sure the beginning of the programme is not missed.
  • Page 39 ADVANCED SETTINGS Timer alarm In order for the timer to be activated the digital receiver must be left in standby mode–Do not turn it off. When the timer is activated the message "rEC" is displayed by the front panel. Before you switch into standby you can watch other digital channels while the timer is set by just changing the channels as you normally would.
  • Page 40 ADVANCED SETTINGS Cancelling a timer setting Press MENU and select the 1st option (Setting the Timer). Press the 5 (UP) or (DOWN) button to select the timer setting to be cancelled. Press the BLUE button. Recording with a VCR It is not currently possible to record one digital channel while watching another. The only channel that can be watched when recording a programme from the digital receiver is the channel that is being recorded.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Using Teletext Another feature provided by Digital Terrestrial Television is access to advanced navigational op- tions and new and improved digital text services including high-quality text and graphics. Digital text channels Unlike conventional text services, users now have access to dedicated digital text channels. These channels are selected like other channels by entering the corresponding channel numbers.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Changing Receiver Settings This menu is used to set the following items: subtitles, audio language, sound level, information display time, current time, and alarm time. Follow the instructions below to make these settings. From the remote controller press the MENU but- ton to display the Receiver Settings menu, select Option 4 (Viewing Preferences), and then select Option 1 (ONdigital box Settings).

If necessary, changes can be made by following the instructions below. Press the MENU button, select Option 4 (Viewing Preferences), and then select Option 2 (TV and Video Settings) to display the following menu.
  • Page 46 ADVANCED SETTINGS Regular 4:3 This option is only available if 4:3 was selected in Item 1 of this menu. If the digital receiver is connected to a 4:3 TV you must select whether the programme picture will be expanded full length leaving blank areas at the top and bottom of the screen, or whether the height of the picture will fill the TV screen but the right and left ends of it will be cut off in order to do this.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Changing Modem Settings If you connect your digital receiver to a telephone line you might need to change the settings in this menu. However in most cases, the factory settings will be correct. To change these settings, press the MENU button, select option 4 (viewing preferences) and then op- tion 3 (modem settings).

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Technical information This menu allows the user to check the technical information for the digital receiver. This is only necessary when a problem occurs with the digital receiver. If a problem does occur, this informa- tion may assist customer service personnel to diagnose the problem. There are three options: signal strength, manufacturer data, and auto update.

    ADVANCED SETTINGS Channel Search Normally, this function is only used when first installing and setting up the digital receiver as de- scribed earlier in this manual. You will need to use this function again if you re-install the receiver in another location or wish to search for new channels that have been added since setup was conducted.

    The remote controller can directly control the televisions and VCRs of other major brands. When the remote controller power is first turned on it is programmed for PIONEER brand TVs and VCRs, but if you will use a TV or VCR of another major brand, follow the instruction below to setup the remote controller.
