Introduction to Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008

Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 is the latest extension of the Windows Server family of operating systems (OS). It builds on
the strengths of the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 operating systems. A beta
release of the operating system, Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate 1 (RC1), is now available and provides an
exceptional platform for powering applications, networks, and Web services from the workgroup to the data center and is
currently available for download from the Microsoft website: www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/default.mspx.
Microsoft provides Windows Server 2008 RC1 in the following editions:
• X86 edition
• X64 edition for systems with the following processors:
- Intel
®
Xeon
TM
Processors with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology
- Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD64) Opteron
• Web edition
• Itanium-based system editions for systems with Intel Itanium
IMPORTANT
Windows Server 2008 RC1 is a beta release of the operating system, and therefore, is not
recommended for production servers.

ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 Key technologies in the HP BladeSystem c3000 Enclosure – tower version This article summarizes the key technologies in the tower version of the HP BladeSystem c3000 Enclosure, including Thermal Logic power and cooling technologies, interconnect and storage options, HP Virtual Connect, and Onboard Administrator. Detailed information about these technologies, which are also implemented in the rack version of the HP BladeSystem c3000 Enclosure, is available at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01204885/c01204885.pdf.
  • Page 6: Storage Options

ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 Interconnect options The BladeSystem Tower Enclosure includes a signal midplane (Figure 2-2) that acts as a PCI Express (PCIe) bus to connect the ports of embedded devices to the interconnect bays. It has eight device bay signal connectors (one for each half-height server blade and two for each full-height server blade) and four interconnect module connectors (one for each interconnect bay).
  • Page 7: Hp Virtual Connect Technology

ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 HP Virtual Connect technology In the c-Class architecture, Virtual Connect technology provides virtualized server connections to any industry-standard Ethernet (LAN) or N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV)-enabled Fibre Channel (SAN) switch. Virtual Connect technology virtualizes the server- edge so that networks can communicate with pools of HP BladeSystem servers rather than with individual server blades.
  • Page 8: Fb-Dimm Options For Lower Power Consumption

ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 FB-DIMM options for lower power consumption High memory capacity Intel® processor-based HP ProLiant servers have migrated toward high-speed, serial, Fully Buffered Dual Inline Memory Module (FB-DIMM) technology, mainly because it delivers scalable bandwidth and memory capacity that is not possible with traditional memory system architectures.

  • Page 10: Fan Failure Recovery In Proliant Dl And Ml Servers

ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 Fan failure recovery in ProLiant DL and ML servers HP ProLiant DL and ML servers implement several technologies for handling high-temperature situations resulting from a fan failure. Depending upon the model of the server, the activity of the server when it failed, and the system configuration, these technologies exhibit a number of different behaviors as described in scenarios within this article.
  • Page 11 ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 Models with redundant fans Several ProLiant DL and ML server models support fan sets that provide cooling redundancy. Redundant fans enable these models to operate indefinitely in the event of a single fan failure. If a fan fails, the necessary logging and alerting actions still occur and the other fans will increase in speed to maintain appropriate cooling for the entire system.
