    Drive handling CAUTION: Drives are fragile components that must be handled with care. To prevent damage to the device, damage to a drive, or loss of information, observe these precautions: Before removing or inserting a hard drive, shut down the device. If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system.

    Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitivity. Networks built into many integrated circuits provide some protection, but in many cases, ESD contains enough power to alter device parameters or melt silicon junctions. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor can destroy static-sensitive devices or microcircuitry.

    Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packaging and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts and assemblies with conductive or approved containers or packaging. ● Keep ESD-sensitive parts in their containers until the parts arrive at static-free workstations.

    Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist strap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords. To provide proper ground, wear a strap snugly against the skin at all times.

There are as many as 49 screws, in 7 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the device. Make special note of each screw size and location during removal and replacement. Service tag The service tag, affixed to the bottom of the device, provides information that may be needed when troubleshooting system problems.

If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
  • Page 44 Grasp the tabs on the outer edges of the keyboard (1), lift the rear edge of the keyboard (2) until it rests at an angle, and then slide it back (3) until it rests on the display assembly. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector (1) to which the keyboard cable is attached, and then disconnect the cable (2) from the system board.

    Mass storage devices NOTE: Each hard drive spare part kit and solid-state drive spare part kit includes a cable and bracket.   • Page 46 Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×4.5 screws (3) that secure the hard drive to the device. Then lift the drive (4) up, and slide it out of the drive bay. Reverse this procedure to install the hard drive. To remove the solid-state drive: Release the ZIF connector (1) to which the USB board pass-through cable (that lies across the top of the drive) is attached.
  • Page 47 Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×4.5 screws (3) that secure the drive bracket to the device, and then remove the bracket (4) from the drive bay. Remove the three Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the solid-state drive to the bracket, and then remove the drive from the bracket (2).

    Top cover Description Top cover (includes TouchPad) Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: Shut down the device. If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices connected to the device.

Lift the rear edge of the top cover (1), swing it up, and then slide it back slightly to rest against the display assembly (2) at an angle.

    Heat sink assembly NOTE: The heat sink assembly spare part kit includes replacement thermal material. Description Heat sink assembly Before removing the heat sink assembly, follow these steps: Shut down the device. If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
  • Page 60 Remove the heat sink assembly (2). NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal material located between the heat sink assembly and system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink assembly from side to side to detach the assembly. NOTE: The thermal material must be thoroughly cleaned from the surfaces of the heat sink assembly and the system board each time the heat sink assembly is removed.

    NOTE: The fan spare part kit does not include a fan cable. The fan cable is included in the Cable Kit, spare part number 507708-001. Description NOTE: To properly ventilate the device, allow at least a 7.6-cm (3-inch) clearance on the left side of the device.
  • Page 62 Remove the fan: Detach the black Mylar covering from the fan. Detach the black tape from the fan cables, and then move the cables aside. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×4.5 screw (1) and the Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screw (2) that secure the fan to the base enclosure.
  • Page 63 Remove the fan (3). Reverse this procedure to install the fan. NOTE: To properly ventilate the device, allow at least a 7.6-cm (3-inch) clearance on the left side of the device. The device uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temperature conditions exist.

    USB board and internal display switch NOTE: The internal display switch module is included in the Cable Kit, spare part number 507708-001. Description USB board Before removing the USB board, follow these steps: Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
  • Page 65 Remove the DC jack bracket (2) and the USB board (3) from the base enclosure. If it is necessary to replace the internal display switch module, perform the following steps: Remove the Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screw (1) that secures the internal display switch bracket to the base enclosure.

    Display assembly NOTE: Each display assembly spare part kit includes 1 webcam, 1 microphone, 1 speaker box, and 2 WLAN antenna transceivers/cables. NOTE: 10.1-inch display assembly components are not sold separately. The complete display assembly is available as spare part number 509696-001 for the red-colored model or 507312-001 for all other models.
  • Page 67 CAUTION: Support the display assembly when removing the following screws. Failure to support the display assembly can result in damage to the display assembly and other device components. Remove the three remaining Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screws (1) that secure the display assembly to the device, and then remove the display assembly (2).
  • Page 68 Remove the speaker assembly (2). The speaker assembly is available using spare part number 506335-001. If it is necessary to replace the display hinges, remove the two Phillips PM2.0×4.5 screws (1) that secure each hinge to the display enclosure, and then remove the hinges (2). The hinges are available in the Display Hinge Kit, spare part number 504596-001 for all 8.9-inch panels.
  • Page 69 If it is necessary to replace the display bezel, flex the inside edges of the bottom (1), left and right sides (2), and the top (3) of the display bezel until the bezel disengages from the display enclosure, and then remove the display bezel (4). The spare part number for the 8.9-inch display bezels is 506333-001.
  • Page 70 Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the webcam module to the display enclosure, and then remove the webcam module (2). The webcam module is available using spare part number 504594-001 for all 8.9-inch panels. If it is necessary to replace the display panel, perform the following steps: Remove the nine Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws that secure the display panel to the display enclosure.
  • Page 71 Remove the display panel from the display enclosure (3). An 8.9-inch display panel is available using spare part number 509698-001. If it is necessary to replace the display panel brackets, remove the four Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the brackets to the display panel, and then remove the brackets (2). The brackets are available in the Display Hinge Kit, spare part number 504596-001 for all 8.9-inch panels.
  • Page 72 If it is necessary to replace the wireless antenna transceivers and cables, detach the cables from the adhesive that secures them to the display enclosure, and then remove the cables. The wireless antenna transceivers and cables for all 8.9-inch panels are available in the Display Cable Kit, spare part number 504597-001 (with WLAN).
